Pro tip: If you’re looking for free family tree software, check out MyHeritage Family Tree Builder.
Legacy Family Tree 9 simplifies the initial process so if you are new to the software, the Guided Startup Wizard is a big help. It is there to offer helpful advice when you start a new family tree and has several screens to help you unlock and understand the Deluxe Version if you have purchased it.
Learn how to import a file, or start by entering the details of three generations and go from there.
This is the home tab on the main screen and is where all the most important information about your family tree can be found. It is a handy tool for organizing as well as staying up to date. The Legacy News box is home to all the latest genealogy-related news and there is a To-Do list where the user can insert reminders to be shown on specific days.
This is one of two navigational screens, and allows you to view more than one family at any time – impressive! Users can switch between generations and display an entire family at any time.
Family View neatly displays couples, and additional information about major events including weddings, and where they were born and died. Below the couple is their children, where up to 60 children can be displayed. That’s plenty enough for most!
This is the second navigational screen and displays any current individual as well as up to four generations of parents. There are color-coded buttons to quickly show descendants, and if the main individual has children.
You can also see a descendent view that displays a descendant chart of the current person and a chronology view. This analysis tool quickly allows you to see all the major events around a person’s life.
This shows all the individuals in your family file. Significant information is displayed and the columns can even be customized to show different records.
This tab can be found on the home screen and is a useful tool for starting a new search and getting help finding an ancestor. This is where you will find suggested sources from thousands and thousands that are being added to all the time.
Another neat feature of Legacy Family Tree 9 is the handy SourceWriter system. It allows you to cite sources and document all the information about individuals and life events. Easy-to-use templates allow you to record each source once and cite it as many times as you like.
One of the main strengths of Legacy Family Tree 9 is the graphical charts. With 29 charts, there are more to choose from than most genealogy programs. There are even charts for DNA records! The charting quality is great. You get a good say in how you display each chart – you can even add a background image.
Perhaps the most impressive feature is the number and scale of the reports available. Some of the available reports include the following:
- Birthday and Anniversary Calendar
- Family Group Sheets
- Descendant Reports
- Pedigree Charts
- Individual Reports
- Ancestor Chart
- Lineage Reports
- Descendant Book (Register)
- Multiple Lines of Descent Report
- Descendant Narrative Report
- To-Do Report
- Source Citation Report
- Ahnentafel (Ancestor) Book Generation
- Event Report
- Name Tags
Moving on from publishing reports is another impressive feature. Publishing allows you to combine two reports into one larger report. The merging of information can be indeed sourced as you organize it with a title page, preface page, copyright notice page, introduction, and more.
Free version vs paid features (standard vs deluxe)
The paid features are unlocked when you make a purchase. You will not have the customer number required to access the extra features without the Deluxe version.
These features include SourceWriter, Mapping, and several other reports. The deluxe version also includes a guided setup wizard, hinting to help you automatically find ancestors, stories, hashtags (no longer limited to 9 hashtags), compare 2 people, color coding, media sorting, interview reports, new relationship calculator, enhanced backups, and more.
However, many of the basic reports are still available to use in the standard version of Legacy Family Tree 9. Also, downloading the standard edition is not a trial with an obligation to purchase. Many users find that the standard edition offers everything they need.
Legacy Family Tree 9 is compatible with Windows 10 Pro or Home, Windows 8, Windows 7. Also note that Legacy runs on newer Macs with Windows installed under Bootcamp, Parallel, or Fusion.
